The Journey Thus Far: Genesis 1-11

In just the first 5 days of our journey through the Old Testament to Jesus, we have covered quite a few significant stories. It’s likely they were somewhat familiar, but if you’re like me, you may have noticed or wondered new things in reading them this time. In particular, since we;re reading them in Advent, you may be wondering how these stories in Genesis 1-11 fit into the bigger story of what God is doing in and through the birth of Jesus.

A resource I find very helpful for thinking about Biblical themes and making connections between stories, is “The Bible Project.” Check out their summary (and cool drawing) of Genesis 1-11:

And if you’re still wondering what today’s story about the attempted tower of Babel might have to do with Jesus, consider this quote from The Jesus Storybook Bible story, “A Giant Staircase to Heaven”:

“You see, God knew, however high they reached, however hard they tried, people could never get back to heaven by themselves. People didn’t need a staircase; they needed a Rescuer. Because the way back to heaven wasn’t a staircase; it was a Person.

People could never reach up to Heaven, so Heaven would have to come down to them.

And, one day, it would.”
